In 1649, ostracized Puritans built a settlement in the Province of Maryland on the north shore of the Severn River. They were led by Governor William Stone and named the settlement, Providence. Later, they moved their settlement to the south shores because it was easier to protect. It was originally named "Town at Proctor's", then it was "Town at the Severn" and was again changed to "Anne Arundel's Towne" after Lord Baltimore's wife who died shortly thereafter. In 1654, Parliament took control of Maryland and Stone was cast off to Virginia. However, Lord Baltimore ordered his return as the leader of a Cavalier Force. Much later on, Annapolis was temporarily the capital of the U.S. after the Treaty of Paris was signed. Now, visitors can stay in a fine Annapolis hotel and discover the rest of what the city has to offer.
The William Paca House features one of the best colonial period, restored mansions in the country. Featuring its original 18th century style, it was originally built by Paca from 1763 to 1765 and was one of the city's first five, part Georgian homes. The house is filled with museum grade furnishings all relevant to the period including family silver and ceramics. Guests can take guided tours of the house, which are held hourly on the half hour, lasting approximately forty minutes. There is also the Paca Garden, which was also designed by William Paca as he was building his house. It is open to the public and guests can guide themselves through this two-acre reserve of natural beauty and view it from the multi-level terraces. Visitors can also host events in the garden.
